“The page had its own secret language; homesteading, beef tallow, seed oils, unschooling” (S180)

Dylan continued watching. The page had its own secret language; homesteading, beef tallow, seed oils, unschooling. You don’t have to be rich, the woman promised. She wasn’t like those other, modern women, the ones with tattoos, with no father figure, literal or spiritual. She was Godly; so was her husband, so were their four cherub-faced kids. This is how life was meant to be lived, modestly and without sin. Dylan followed a day in her life as she woke up before the sun, her marital room almost priestly in its barrenness, made bread, collected eggs from the henhouse. He expanded the caption, skimming over a paragraph-long quote from the Sermon on the Mount. Was this real happiness? Watching the tiny sunset on his phone screen, Dylan realised that he did feel lost. Before phones, before dating apps and one-night stands, didn’t people used to live like this? Men cared about their wives; women needed their husbands. Was it possible, these days, to be needed?
